DWC Champs Sign-up Party TONIGHT!

Dear Wheel Clubbers,

The Wheel Club Championships Sign-up party is tonight, Thursday, August 21st from 5:30 pm 7:30 pm at Carvers on the Back Patio. We hope everyone will join us. Refreshments and munchies will be served. Please encourage everyone to join us and sign-up for the events.

We understand that many club members and participants in the club rides have concerns and thoughts about the future of the Tuesday night rides. We hope that you will use this as an opportunity to get involved and share your thoughts and ideas. We understand that the abrupt end to the club ride season is disappointing but we hope that you all can understand that we are trying to come up with a program for 2009 that will increase safety and enable us to get the endorsement of law enforcement and community officials. Many of the board members will be at the sign-up party and will be happy to talk about this issue. We hope to have specific meetings and/or planning sessions to discuss the rides specifically in the very near future but please feel free to come and begin the conversation at the sign-up event.

We are also in need of volunteers for the event so please encourage family and friends to come give us a hand if they can. We will have a sign up sheet at the party.

The club championships are set and we are excited about the diversity of races. After getting feedback from a number of folks and gagging interest we have come up with the following categories:

Mens A

Mens B+/ Womens B+/ Mens 40+ (rides with B+) race together

Mens B/ Womens B/ Womens 40+ (Rides with B) race together

Mens C/ Womens C/ race together

The categories will be scored separately but will race together to ensure big enough field sizes. We reserve the right to combine fields if groups are too small. We regret that not all age categories are represented and we will work to add those possibly in the future. We also hope to find a permanent place on the calendar for this event in the future so people can plan ahead.

The scoring of this years event will be as follows:

Sprint Bonus Points for both RR and Criterium:

There will be a sprint bonus in both the Road Race and the Criteriums. The bonus will be for first place only. The Road Race sprint will be on HWY 550 100 yards North of the turn-off for Timberline Academy and the Crit bonus will be announced at the start of the event. These bonuses will be added to the winners overall score.

DWC Club Championship Sign-up Party

Wheel Club Championships
Sign-up party this Thursday, August 21, 5:30 pm -7:30 pm at Carvers
YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR ALL RACES AT THE PARTY

This years Durango Wheel Club Championships will take place during the first two weeks of September. The omnium will consist of 4 races. Your top three finishes will count toward the overall. Jerseys will be awarded to the overall winners in each category. You must compete in at least 3 events to be eligible for a jersey.

We need volunteers to help with all of the races. Please sign up to volunteer at the party.

The categories are: Men A, B+, B, C and Women B+, B, C

The races are:

Sept 4 (Thursday)
Extended North Valley Loop 16.4 miles, Start on Trimble Lane at SANDCO entrance just west of Animas River Bridge, W. to 550, N. to CR 250 (old KOA Turn), Bakers Bridge, S to Trimble, W to Hwy. 550, N to Finish at mile marker 33 (first hump just past RR tracks). First rider off at 5:30 pm. Start times will be e-mailed and posted on the website by Sept 3.

Sept 7 (Sunday)
Criterium at Mercy
Races start at 8 am. Race times will be posted later but will probably be something like this: Cs at 8am, Bs at 9am, B+s at 10am, and As at 11am. We need volunteers to help with the crit. If you plan to race then you should also plan to volunteer.

Sept 10 (Wednesday)
Mtn Bike TT in Horse Gulch (Meadow, Stacys, Cuchillo)
Start at the meadow area in Horse Gulch. Start times will be e-mailed and posted on the website. First rider off at 5:30 pm.

Sept 13 (Saturday)
Road Race to top of Coal Bank
The race starts just east of the intersection of 550 and Trimble Lane. The As will start at 8:00 am, B+s at 8:02 am , Bs at 8:04 am, and Cs at 8:06 am. There will be a points sprint very early in the race. The location of the sprint line will be announced later.

You must be a current club member to compete in the club championships. You can pay your $25 annual club dues at the sign-up party on Aug 21. In addition, it will coast $10 per race. You must have a USAC license to compete in the road race on Sept 13. One-day licenses will be available at the sign-up party for $10.

Durango Dirt Lovers Rally

AUGUST 24, 2008

REGISTRATION & RACE PACKET PICK-UP
Register at the Durango Community Recreation Center or on-line at www.active.com.
Early Registration Fee $20 (ends August 17 at 6:00 p.m.)
Late and Day of Registration Fee $30
Race day registration and check-in takes place from 8:30-9:30 A.M. at the Horsegulch Trailhead.
Race STARTS at 10:00 a.m.

COURSE: Something like the following, but maybe not…
The start/finish is up from the parking lot about 1/2 mile– a good warm-up… The course heads out into the
meadow, all racers will start this direction.
Experts Ride:
Meadow/Telegraph/Sidewinder/Grandview/South Rim/Cowboy/Sidewinder/Crites/Anazazi/Stacy’s/Mike’s/
Cuchillo/Meadow, 18.5 miles, under 1:20 for pros.
Sports Ride:
Same as experts only skip Mike’s/CuchilloThis will require thinking! 16 miles.
Beginners Ride:
Meadow/Stacy’s only x 2 — time to move up if you have been riding beginner all year, 6 miles.

AWARDS and LUNCH
A very brief awards presentation and drawing will be held at 2:00 P.M. at the Durango Community Recreation.
Center. As this race is a fund-raiser for the Parks & Recreation Summer Youth Programs,
awards may be limited to a drawing, (drawing prizes include the normal gift certificates, merchandise and misc. fun stuff). Must be present to win. LUNCH is on us at 1:00 P.M. at the Durango Community Recreation Center!

DIRECTIONS:
Highway160 to Santa Rita Drive, Northeast, away from the park, on Santa Rita to first Stop sign. Left (N) on Highway 3 (8th Ave.) to just past the Sonic, right (NE) on 3rd St. (Horse Gulch Road). Park at the bottom, parking is limited, and ride up to the start ( about 1/2 mi. ). Registration/packet pick-up will be at the parking area.

Club Ride Changes

Re: Club Ride Changes for 2009 and the End of the Season

With the end of the road riding season quickly approaching the DWC board wanted to announce some changes to the club rides both for the end of the season and into the future.

First, participants in the club rides and riders throughout
Durango should know that the DWC Board is committed to continuing the club rides. The rides are an important part of the
Durango cycling communities activities arguably the centerpiece of many of our seasons and we hope to be able to continue them for years to come. That said, changes must be made to address safety issues and traffic concerns if the rides are going to continue. We have been extremely fortunate no major accidents have occurred in the last few years but it is only a matter of time if we do not make changes to how the rides are run. The DWC Board is committed to ensuring that the club rides are first and foremost safe and that participants adhere to the rules of the road. The changes outlined below are designed to continue what has been an on going process to address these issues.

END OF THE SEASON

Official
Durango Wheel Club Tuesday Night Rides will end September 2nd
. This will be just prior to the Wheel Club Championships (September 4, 7, 10, 13th). Any Tuesday night group rides occurring after September 2nd will not be sanctioned by the DWC and the existing ride schedules will be taken down. We are ending the rides early to address safety concerns raised by community leaders and law enforcement while we work to make changes for the 2009 season. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but we have to take action immediately.

For the remaining Tuesday night club rides (August 12th, 19th, 26th and September 2nd) The DWC, as we always have, insists that participants adhere to the rules of the road (as stated above each ride schedule on the web).

CLUB RIDES IN 2009 AND THE FUTURE

Despite the official ride moniker the club rides have essentially been unsanctioned races for years and the DWC Board has decided to embrace this fact and change the rides to make them formal, sanctioned events. While we have just begun the process of redesigning the Tuesday Night Club rides we have some general outlines and ideas that we can share at this time:

–We will attempt to stick with the current structure and have A, B +, B and C rides. However these may change.

–We would like to identify 2-3 courses out of town where the rides will be held each week (alternating courses). This will limit the diversity of routes we now enjoy but will enable us to address other safety and traffic issues.

–We hope to permit and sanction the rides (both with an official cycling governing body and with the city, county and state).

–We will work with law enforcement to provide support for the rides.

–The rides will be scored and we hope to have prizes.

None of these ideas have been set in stone yet and we assume there will be other changes as we develop the new program. We will try to keep everyone informed as we move forward.

The DWC Board has already begun working with law enforcement and community leaders. We hope to get these events officially endorsed and supported by both before the start of the 2009 season.

THANK YOU

Cycling is an important part of the Durango Community and we intend to keep it that way for years to come. That is why we are making these changes. Please be patient as we move forward and thank you for your support and enthusiasm. We look forward to ending the season safely and to developing a schedule for next year that makes the rides safer, addresses traffic concerns and ensures that we can continue into the future.
